Have you already looked in specialist mother of the bride shops and thought “I’m not paying THAT much for an outfit that I’m only going to wear once “
Let’s look at things a little differently .
Your son or daughter’s wedding is a special occasion that comes round once or twice in a lifetime for most people.
Unless you are particularly eccentric most people would not be wearing such a special outfit whilst they go about their daily chores.
In general most ladies are not used to “dressing up” with a dress and jacket every day .
Even if you go to work in a suit it’s completely different to a special occasion outfit which may be made from delicate fabric such as silk, taffeta, lace or chiffon and may have much more embellishment in the form of delicate beading than you are used to.
So , say you go into Debenhams and nothing really takes your fancy.Nothing is “dressy enough”.
You trek around an insanely busy shopping centre in the middle of Birmingham on a Saturday afternoon and perhaps go into some other shops like Phase Eight,Hobbs,Coast or even Jacques Vert.
You see some nice dresses in Phase Eight but hmmm you think you really ought to wear a jacket as you are mother of the bride after all.
Your daughter says you look lovely in the outfit (and you do!) .Before you know it you’ve spent nearly £400 on the dress and jacket.
But then there’s the hat , bag and shoes .More money. You don’t see a hat that you like in Phase Eight and they don’t have your size in the shoes.
You think – I know, I’ll go back into Debenhams for the shoes and bag.Debenhams doesn’t have anything so you go to Marks and Spencer .They’ve only got some shoes but no bag.House of Fraser here we come.
You manage to get a bag and shoes in House of Fraser but still no hat.The Bag and shoes have set you back £120 .You don’t want to look like a “typical” Mother of the Bride and you don’t really want to wear a hat but your daughter wants you to.
Where on earth are you going to find a hat that suits you ? You’ve got such a small head nothing seems to fit.
Eventually after 5 hours of shopping you decide to go home (without the hat!) as your feet are killing you, you are tired , hungry and fed up because you haven’t found everything you were looking for.
About 2 months later (you still haven’t managed to muster up the energy to go looking for a hat), you are talking to an old friend who is coming to the wedding. She asks if you have already purchased your outfit yet.
You tell her you have and you describe it to her .There’s a bit of a pause on the other end of the phone then she tells you she has just that day bought a lovely outfit from Phase Eight which sounds exactly like yours!
Oh No! Someone else might be wearing the same outfit. You can’t take the risk that she is wearing the same outfit so you curse under your breath and think to yourself that you’ll just take yours back and get another one.
But you’ve forgotten the shop’s return policy is 28 days so they won’t give you a refund now ,you have to have a credit note.
You get your credit note but think there’s nothing else that you actually like in Phase Eight to spend it on.
Panic starts to set in .Where on earth are you going to find another outfit as time is now ticking on and your daughter keeps pestering you to see if you’ve found anything yet.
You have a look on the internet .After extensive googling you find some outfits you like from a Chinese seller on ebay .
Great – only £50 for a stunning outfit (or it certainly looks stunning from the photos)- and it’ll arrive in 3 weeks time .Perfect.
3 weeks later sure enough the outfit arrives from China .But it doesn’t fit.Why doesn’t it fit? You gave them the right measurements. You measure yourself again .No .The measurements you gave them are correct.
Oh hang on- what’s that? You’re sure the beading detail wasn’t that gaudy on the photo. And why is one part of the dress longer than the other? Hmmm and it doesn’t feel very nice .What IS that material ? Doesn’t feel like silk.
I know . I’ll take it to that nice alterations lady in town that my friend recommended.I’m sure she can fix it .Won’t matter if she shortens the length a bit to make it the same length all the way round as it’s too long anyway. It was only £50 after all.
The next day you take it to the nice alterations lady. She looks at your outfit and asks you what shop you bought it from. You don’t want to tell her you got it from the internet so you mutter something like you can’t remember the name of the shop.
She tells you the outfit is extremely badly made. She says the fabric is likely to tear when she cuts it.She says the dress will effectively need to be remade. She says she won’t be able to take the embellished gaudy beading off without leaving a stain mark .
You say you just want it fixed so you can wear it.Ok she says. Then she takes a bit of an intake of breath( a bit like a builder does !) and says with all the work that needs doing it’s going to cost £250 to fix it .
WHAT !!!!! £250 !!! She must be having a laugh , right ? It only cost £50.
You decide you are not spending £250 to fix something that is probably still going to be awful even after it’s altered.
You go home and have a little cry to yourself (but you don’t tell your daughter as you don’t want to worry her )
Oh my goodness what are you going to do ? It’s now 6 weeks till the wedding and you still haven’t found a replacement outfit. You have already said to the other mum she can get her outfit even though you haven’t yet got yours .It’s not fair to drag things out any longer for her , is it ?
